Brandeis women's soccer huddles

WALTHAM, Mass. – The Brandeis University women's soccer team saw a four-match winning streak come to a close today as the Judges surrendered goals in each half of a 2-0 loss to visiting Tufts University. The Judges fall to 4-2 on the season, while the Jumbos, ranked #18 in Division III by D3Soccer.com, improve to 4-1.

The junior combo of Sophia Lloyd and Liz Reed did in the Judges, as they accounted for all of the visitors' points. In the 37th minute, Reed sent a ball into the middle, where Lloyd turned and fired a ball inside the far left post, past a diving Victoria Richardson (Tolland, Conn./Tolland). The goal was Lloyd's fourth of the season.

The teams played even into the second half, with both goalies making key saves. Richardson denied Reed in the 76th minute, and Tufts rookie Hayley Bernstein made a nice diving stop on Brandeis sophomore Lauren Mastandrea (Hauppauge, N.Y./Hauppauge) in the 78th.

The Jumbos got a key insurance goal in the 82nd minute. On a turnover near midfield, Tufts went on the counter-attack. Lloyd fed Reed coming down the right flank, and Reed went inside to the far post for her fifth goal of the campaign.

For the game, Tufts outshot Brandeis, 18-11, and owned a 4-1 edge in corner kicks. Richardson made a career-high seven saves in the losing effort, while Bernstein earned the win with four stops. It was the first time in four meetings that the teams did not go into overtime, and Brandeis saw a five-match series unbeaten streak snapped (3-0-2).

The Judges return to action this Saturday, September 21, with a non-conference match at Lasell University at 3 p.m. Tufts hosts Colby in NESCAC action Saturday at 12:30 p.m.
