WALTHAM, Mass. – The Brandeis University women's soccer team exploded for four second-half goals to blow open a close contest as the Judges defeated visiting Wellesley College, 5-0, on Gordon Field tonight. With the win, Brandeis improves to 6-2 on the season, while the Blue fall to 3-5.
The Judges got all the scoring they would need in the 35th minute when sophomore Makenna Hunt (Tyngsborough, Mass./Tyngsborough) scored her team-leading seventh goal of the season. She knocked home a cross from rookie Caroline Swan (Pittsburgh, Pa./Pine Richland), who picked up an assist for the second game in a row.
Brandeis blew things open with a pair of goals three minutes apart early in the second half. In the 57th minute, sophomore Juliette Carreiro (Upton, Mass./Nipmuc Regional) scored her fifth of the season when she found the right netting on a feed from senior Katie Hayes (Eau Claire, Wisc./Regis). Hayes netted her first goal of the season and the 10th of her career in the 60th minute when she headed home a service by Hunt.
In the 70th minute, Carreiro notched her team-leading fourth assist of the season when her through-ball found a streaking Jessica Herman (Plantation, Fla./NSU University School). The rookie dribbled in on net and unleashed a shot for her third goal of the campaign. Senior Emma Spector (Needham, Mass./Needham) closed out the scoring in the 75th minute by taking advantage of a Wellesley miscue to score her second goal of the season and fifth of her career.
Brandeis goalies Victoria Richardson (Tolland, Conn./Tolland) and Rebecca Gold (Pleasant Valley, N.Y./Arlington) each made one save in their respective halves of play. Olivia Reckley had six stops for the Blue in the losing effort. Brandeis outshot Wellesley, 19-6, and had a 7-1 advantage in corner kicks.
The Judges return to action on Saturday at 1 p.m. against Emmanuel College. The game will be a Laces Up For Cancer contest to raise awareness of pediatric cancer.
