WALTHAM, Mass. – The Brandeis University women's soccer team got the first career win for head coach Mary Shimko '14 in style today as the Judges blasted past the visiting Lasell University Lasers, 6-0, on Gordon Field. The Judges improve to 1-0-1 on the campaign, while Lasell falls to 0-1.

Brandeis, which controlled the entire game, outshooting Lasell, 35-2, broke through with two goals just 85 seconds apart midway through the first half. In the 27th minute, senior forward Juliette Carreiro (Upton, Mass. / Nipmuc Regional), the team's leading scorer in 2019, ran on to a ball played over the top by sophomore forward Sydney Lenhart (Tucson, Ariz. / Salpointe Catholic) and blasted it through the keeper for her first goal of the season. In the 28th minute, sophomore Yasla Ngoma (North Plainfield, N.J. / Oak Knoll) shed one defender at midfield and ran through another on her way into the 18-yard box, where her left-footed shot beat the Lasell keeper. It was Ngoma's second of the season. Brandeis added a third goal before halftime when a Laser player directed the ball into the net on corner kick.

In the second half, senior forward Makenna Hunt (Tyngsborough, Mass. / Tyngsborough) converted in the 57th minute on a feed from rookie Dominique Paglia (Westford, Mass. / Westford Acad.) after a nice long ball from senior Daria Bakhtiari (Wilmington, Mass./Central Catholic). Ngoma added her second tally of the game and third of the season in the 64th minute, finishing Carreiro's cross from the left flank. The Judges closed out the scoring in the 86th minute when rookie Charlotte Majer (Wrentham, Mass. / King Phillip Regional) knocked home a rebound off of Lenhart's initial shot.

Brandeis goalies Hannah Bassan (Aventura, Fla. / NSU University School) and Jessica Murawsky (Huntington Valley, Pa. / Lower Moreland) were untested in net for the Judges. Angela Sanzari made 16 saves, a career-high, for the Lasers.

Brandeis returns to action on Wednesday evening at 7 p.m. when they host Clark University. Lasell is at Babson on Labor Day for a 1 p.m. kickoff.
