WALTHAM, Mass. – The Brandeis University women's soccer team got points from six different players, including a two-goal performance from sophomore Sydney Lenhart (Tucson, Ariz./Salpointe Catholic) and three assists from senior Juliette Carreiro (Upton, Mass./Nipmuc Regional) as the Judges defeated Eastern Connecticut State University, 5-0, on Gordon Field. With the win, the Judges close out their four-match homestand with a 2-1-1 record, while the Warriors fall to 2-1.
Brandeis demonstrated some quick-strike ability in this one, scoring four of their five goals within a couple of minutes of each other. In the first half, Lenhart scored her first collegiate goal in the 23rd minute when she tapped home Carreiro's cross from the left flank. Just over two minutes later in the 26th minute, Carreiro found senior Makenna Hunt (Tyngsboro, Mass./Tyngsboro) from the left side again, and hunt blasted home her second goal of the season and the 10th of her career off the hands of the ECSU goalkeeper.
In the second half, Brandeis's leading scorer, sophomore Yasla Ngoma (North Plainfield, N.J./Oak Knoll) blasted home her fourth goal of the season when she emerged from a scrum following Caroline Swan's (Pittsburgh, Pa./Pine Richland) corner kick in the 61st minute. The Judges added two more quick goals in the 67th and 68th minutes. Lenhart notched her second goal of the game on a beautiful feed from Carreiro that left her wide open versus the keeper. Lenhart slid it under her dive to make it 4-0. Senior Daria Bakhtiari (Wilmington, Mass./Central Catholic) closed out the scoring 90 seconds later when she headed home a nice flick into the box from Swan.
Brandeis owned a 30-2 shooting advantage on ECSU. The Warriors' Alexis Tyrell made six saves and allowed four goals in the first 67-plus minutes, while Emily Wallace allowed one goal in the final 22 minutes. The Warriors' defense also prevented a pair of goals by covering open nets, with Carmen Nieves denying Hunt in the 10th minute and Emily Barata doing the same against Ngoma in the 83rd. Brandeis first-year Hannah Bassan (Aventura, Fla. / NSU University School) and junior Jessica Murawsky (Huntington Valley, Pa. / Lower Moreland) were untested in net for the Judges.
Brandeis is back in action on Tuesday afternoon at 4 p.m at Babson College in their first road game of the season. ECSU opens Little East Conference play next Saturday at home against UMass Boston.
