WELLESLEY, Mass. – The Brandeis University women's soccer team came away with a 1-1 draw today in a non-conference matchup at Babson College. The Judges move to 2-1-2 on the season, while the Beavers are now 2-2-1.
The Judges controlled play in the first half, outshooting Brandeis, 9-4, before the break, with Babson's Morgan Fedosiewich making five saves in the opening 45 minutes. Brandeis rookie Hannah Bassan (Aventura, Fla. / NSU University School) made her finest stop just 15 seconds into the second half after a giveaway by her defense.
Brandeis put four more shots on Fedosiewich before breaking through in the 72nd minute. Sophomore Yasla Ngoma (North Plainfield, N.J. / Oak Knoll) took a shot from about 10 yards out that trickled through the keeper's hands. As a Babson defender tried to clear it, she instead deflected it into her own net for an own goal. It was the third own goal the Judges have been credited with this season.
Just under four-and-a-half minutes later, Babson evened the score. The Beavers' Sydney McLaughlin sent a cross from the right side, and Maria Colon Figueroa placed it home inside the far post for her first goal of the season. The Beavers had a chance to win in the 83rd minute, but McLaughlin hit the crossbar with a left-footed shot.
In the overtime, Brandeis had three shots to none for Babson, but the Fedosiewich made a diving stop on Judge senior Daria Bakhtiari (Wilmington, Mass./Central Catholic) in the 99th minute to preserve the draw.
For the game, Brandeis finished with a 19-10 shooting advantage, including 10-2 in shots on goal. Bakhtiari had five shots, four of which landed on net. Fedosiewich had 10 saves, the fifth double-digit-save match of her career. Bassan finished with two saves for the Judges.
Brandeis returns to action on Saturday afternoon with another road match at Emerson College at 1 p.m.
