Chui adds another NCAA mark as women's swimming places fifth at MIT

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. -- Rookie standout Angela Chui (Toms River, N.J./Peddie School) had an outstanding meet for the Brandeis women's swimming and diving team at this weekend's MIT Invitational. She led the Judges to fifth place by winning three events, setting four school records and adding two more NCAA championship-qualifying performance to her resume.

Chui's first win came in the 200-yard individual medley, in which she lowered her school-record time to 2:10.16. It was her second NCAA Championship 'B' Qualifying standard performance of the season. Her second win, school record and NCAA performance of the meet came in the 400 IM, when she surpassed her teammate, junior Hollis Viray (Glastonbury, Conn./Glastonbury), with a time of 4:37.07. Chui's final win came in the 200-yard backstroke, an event she had previously qualified for NCAAs, when she finished with a time of 2:09.26. Her third school record came in a second-place finish in the 100 back, when she lowered her own school record and became the only Brandeis woman to break the one-minute mark in the event with a time of 59.92 seconds, less than three-tenths of a second off NCAA qualifying time. Chui, who also finished fifth in the 200 butterfly, accounted for 95 of the Judges 366 points on her own, while contributing to three relays that scored another 80 points.

Viray was another standout performer for the Judges with four top-10 finishes. She had the Judges' only other victory in the 200-yard breaststroke with a performance of 2:30.58. Viray also finished fifth in the 100 breast in 1:10.64, and sixth in the 400 IM in 4:51.70. Her final top-10 was a tenth-place finish in the 200-yard butterfly in 2:23.21.

Sophomore diver Dana Simms (Rockville, Md./Walter Johnson) earned a pair of third-place finishes. She posted a score of 186.25 in the three-meter event and 178.30 in the one-meter. Rookie Julia Derk (Greeley, Colo./Greeley West) rounded out the top-10 finishes for the Judges with a fourth-place showing in the 200-yard freestyle with a time of 1:59.59. Brandeis's top relay performance came in the 800-yard free relay, when the team of Chui, Derk, junior Siobhan Lyons (Leominster, Mass./Notre Dame Acad.) and Viray finished in fourth place with a time of 8:07.35, shaving three seconds off the school record.
