CHICAGO, Ill. -- The Brandeis University women's swimming and diving team established four new school records this weekend at the University Athletic Association championships at the University of Chicago. The Judges scored 614 points to finish in eighth place, a 26-point improvement from 2008 and their highest point total since the conference meet went to 24 places.

As has been the case all season, the Judges were paced by rookie Angela Chui (Toms River, N.J./Peddie School), who was involved in all four school records and earned Brandeis's only All-UAA recognition. Her best finish, earning All-Conference accolades, came on the second day of competition, when she took third place in the 400-yard individual medley. Her time of 4:35.90 shaved more than a second off her own school record and improved her chances of being selected for the NCAA Division III championships with one of three ‘B' cut performances.

In her other individual races, on the first day of racing Chui shaved one-tenth of a second off her school record time in preliminaries of the 200-yard IM, posting a mark of 2:10.06, the third-fastest time of the qualifying heat. She went on to finish fifth in the finals with a time of 2:10.38. Chui's final individual event, on Day Three, was the 200-yard backstroke, where she finished seventh overall with a third NCAA'B' cut time of 2:08.59, though it did not improve her season-best time.

Chui's two other records came as a member of a relay team. On Day One, she swam the lead backstroke leg in the 400-yard medley relay. Followed by teammates junior Hollis Viray (Glastonbury, Conn./Glastonbury), junior Siobhan Lyons (Leominster, Mass./Notre Dame Acad.) and rookie Julia Derk (Greeley, Colo./Greeley West), the Judges finished in eighth place with a time of 4:04.73, shaving 10 seconds off their time in preliminaries and three seconds off their school record, which had been set earlier in January. The same quartet then combined for a school-record on Day Two in the 200 medley relay as well. Their time of 1:52.25 shaved just a tad under three-quarters of a second off a six-year-old mark.

Viray reached two other finals races on the weekend in both breaststroke events. She took seventh place in the 200 on the last day of competition, establishing a personal-best in the prelims with a time of 2:28.28, while posting a 2:28.63 in the finals. She was eighth in the 100, where her time of 1:08.32 in the prelims was the second-best time in school history. She finished in 1:02.69 in the finals.

The Judges had several other fine outings, especially on Day Two of the meet. Derk turned in two times that proved to be second on the Judges' all-time list. Her time of 1:58.08 in the 200-yard freestyle was 14^th in the prelims before finishing two spots lower with a time of 2:02.78 in the finals. Her mark of 1:02.69 in the prelims of the 100 backstroke was also second in the Brandeis books before taking 20^th in the finals with a time of 1:02.82. Lyons added points for the Judges in the 100-yard butterfly, where she won her ‘C' final race to place 17^th with a personal-best time of 1:01.95, while her 15^th-place performance in the 200 fly came in a time of 2:19.17 after a mark of 2:17.35 in the heats.

The Brandeis women had one other top-five performance on the meet. In addition to Chui, sophomore diver Dana Simms (Rockville, Md./Walter Johnson) was fifth in the one-meter event with a score of 322.30, setting a personal best for an 11-dive championship meet and missing All-Association honors by just 33 points. Simms also finished seven in the 3-meter event with a score of 321.60.
