Despite 400 medley relay record, women's swimming falls to Wheaton

NORTON, Mass. -- The Brandeis women's swimming and diving team won 10 of 13 events, including a school and facility record in the opening 400-yard medley relay, but the Judges could not overcome the depth of the host Wheaton College Lyons, falling by a score of 125-118.

Brandeis (4-3) opened the meet in style, by setting the school record in the 400 medley relay with a time of 4:07.46. The team of rookie Angela Chui (Toms River, N.J./Peddie School), junior Hollis Viray (Glastonbury, Conn./Glastonbury), junior Siobhan Lyons (Leominster, Mass./Notre Dame Acad.) and rookie Julia Derk (Greeley, Colo./Greeley West) erased a six-year-old Brandeis record with their win.

Three members of that relay went on to multiple individual wins as well. Lyons came right back and captured the very next event, the 1,000-yard freestyle with a time of 11:22.00. She also took the 200-yard butterfly in 2:17.27. Viray won the 200-yard individual medley (2:16.81) and the 200 breaststroke (2:30.20), while Chui won back-to-back events, the 200 backstroke (2:16.79) and the 500 free (5:28.90).

Sophomore diver Dana Simms (Rockvile, Md./Walter Johnson) also provided two wins, taking the 1-meter event with a score of 221.40 and the 3-meters with a mark of 225.00.

The Judges are next in action next Wednesday evening at Clark University.
