Laborio earns first two collegiate wins as Judges fall to Roger Williams

WALTHAM, Mass. – In their second home meet of the 2012-13 season, the Brandeis Swimming and Diving teams picked up 10 victories in a pair of losses to Roger Williams University. The men fell 144-110, while the women lost 152-116.

The Brandeis women had two multiple winners, as the team swept both of the breaststroke and backstroke events.

Senior Holly Spicer (Northampton, Mass./Northampton) won both of the breaststroke events, setting personal bests in the process. The senior won the 100-yard race in 1:10.65 and the 200 in 2:34.02.

Rookie Fay Laborio (Cranston, R.I./Cranston West) picked up the first two wins of her Brandeis career in the 100-yard and 200-yard backstroke. Laborio won the 100 with a time of 1:07.58, and finished off the sweep with a time of 2:24.17 in the 200.

On thhe men's side, Brandeis was led by rookie Brian Luk (Hong Kong/Northfield Mount Hermon), who picked up three victories in the meet. Luk won the 100-yard freestyle in 49.74 seconds, the 200-yard freestyle in 1:50.28 and the 100-yard butterfly in 55.97. His performance in both the 200 free and the butterfly were new personal bests.

Sophomore Max Fabian (Keene, N.H./Oak Meadow) was a double winner for the Judges in the distance events. Two weeks after setting a school record in the 1000-yard freestyle, Fabian again grabbed first in the event. He finished with a time of 10:06.76, nearly 26 seconds ahead of the second-place finisher, Roger Williams senior Tim Ragan (Topsfield, Mass./Masconomet). Fabian also won the 500 free with a time of 5:00.59 and finished second in the 200-yard breaststroke, touching the wall in 2:22.34.

Rookie Theresa Gaffney (Braintree, Mass./Braintree) rounded out the winners for the Judges. The distance swimmer finished first in the 1000-yard freestyle with a time of 11:49.30.

Other top finishers for the Judges included rookies David Lazarovich (Stowe, Vt./South Burlington) and Lauren Cruz (Redmond, Wash./Hamilton East-Steinert), both of whom finished second in the 200-yard individual medley. Lazarovich finished with a time of 2:12.65, while Cruz touched the wall in 2:27.57.

Brandeis grabbed second place in both of the 50-yard freestyle events as well. On the men's side, senior Niko Karkantis (Acton, Mass./Acton-Boxborough Reg.)shaved more than two seconds off of his personal best with a time of 24.08. Rookie Fallon Bushee's (Malden, Mass./Mystic Valley Regional Charter School) time of 26.86 seconds left her just 0.31 seconds out of first place.

Both the men's and women's teams will next compete against Providence College. The Friars will play host to the Judges next Saturday.
