Women fall to BC, 156-98

CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. – Sophomore Max Fabian (Keene, N.H./Oak Meadow) won two events last Friday afternoon as the Brandeis University men's swimming and diving team picked up its first win of the 2012-13 season, their first since 2010 when pool issues forced the suspension of the program. The Judges defeated Bridgewater State University, 158-124, in a double-dual meet at Boston College. The Judges also fell to the host Division I Boston College Eagles, 160-110. The Brandeis women also fell to BC, 156-98.

On the women's side, the top performer was rookie Fallon Bushee (Malden, Mass. / Mystic Valley Regional Charter Sch.), who came in second in the 50-yard freestyle with a time of 26.50 seconds and third in the 100 free in 1:00.33. Senior Holly Spicer (Northampton, Mass./Northampton) also finished second in the 200 breaststroke with a time of 2:39.80, while rookie Lauren Cruz (Redmond, Wash. / Hamilton East-Steinert) was second in the 500 free with a time of 5:37.16 and third in the 200 free (2:07.13). Sophomore diver Eliza Kopelman (Chestnut Hill, Mass. / Brookline) performing in her back yard, was third in both events, with a score of 185.30 in the 1-meter event and 171.70 in the 3-meters.

For the men, Fabian picked up victories in the two long-distance freestyle events. He won the 1000-yard freestyle with a time of 10:09.17, winning by more than 35 seconds over a swimmer from BC. Fabian also captured the 500 free with a time of 5:07.21, a four-second margin of victory. Fabian also placed second in the 200-yard butterfly with a time of 2:05.61.

The Judges had two other wins on the men's side, where rookie Brian Luk (Hong Kong/Northfield Mount Hermon) took the 50-yard free in 22.72 seconds, ahead of four BC swimmers, winning by 0.71 seconds. Luk also placed second in the 100 fly (56.28 seconds) and 200 free (1:53.76). Junior Padraig Murphy (Northampton, Mass. / Northampton) had a four-and-a-half second win on the 200-yard backstroke with a time of 2:09.46. He was third in the 100 back (59.27 seconds) and the 200 IM (2:09.65).

The Judges also received top-three performances from rookie David Lazarovich (Stowe, Vt. / South Burlington) in the 100- and 200-yard breaststroke (1:08.56 and 2:31.20); senior Jared Goldman (Lloyd Harbor, N.Y. / Cold Spring Harbor) in the 100- and 200-yard butterfly (1:02.80 and 2:29.83) and senior Niko Karkantis (Acton, Mass./Acton-Boxborough Regional)  in the 100 free (53.21 seconds).

The Judges are back in action on Saturday, January 19, at Trinity College.
