CHICAGO, Ill. -- In their first University Athletic Association championship meet since 2010, the Brandeis men's swimming and diving team had two competitors reach the top 24 on the first day of competition at the University of Chicago, while the women had one individual.
The Brandeis women also competed on the first day of UAAs. The Judges had one individual scorer, sophomore diver Eliza Kopelman (Chestnut Hill, Mass./Brookline) who took 13th in the 3-meter diving event with a score of 258.20. Senior Holly Spicer (Northampton, Mass./Northampton) was the top swimmer, coming in 31st in the 200 individual medley with a time of 2:26.04. With three scoring relays, the Judges came in eighth after Day One of the UAAs with 62 points.
In the 500-yard freestyle, sophomore Max Fabian (Keene, N.H./Oak Meadow) had the squad's top performance. Fabian swam a time of 4:47.02 in the preliminaries, just missing the 'B' finals by eleven-hundredths of a second. In the evening's races, Fabian finished second in the 'C' finals with a time of 4:45.18, the second-fastest time in program history. It was the 14th-fastest time in the final session.
Rookie Brian Luk (Hong Kong/Northfield Mount Hermon) was the Judges' other individual scorer in the 50-yard freestyle. Luk was 20th in the prelims in the event with a time of 21.78 seconds and ended up 22nd overall with a time of 22.04 seconds in the finals.
Along with the two individual performances and two relays that competed in the 200 freestyle and 400 medley relays, the Judges scored 144 points, putting them in eighth place in the UAA.
