WATERVILLE, Maine – The Brandeis University swimming and diving team won 20 of 32 events in their final meet of 2016, as the Judges earned a split at Colby College. The men won 12 events and defeated the Mules, 161-116, while the women dropped a 119-167 decision despite winning eight events.
TOP INDIVIDUAL PERFORMERS – TRIPLE WINNERS
- The Judges had two triple-winners, one on each side.
- For the men, senior Edan Zitelny (Syosset, N.Y./Syosset) swept the butterfly events, taking the 100 in 52.81 seconds and the 200 in 1:58.47. He also edged brother Tamir in the 200-yard individual medley by 0.53 seconds with a time of 1:59.68 thanks to a one-and-a-half second advantage in the butterfly leg.
- On the women's side, rookie Natalya Wozab (Plantation, Fla./St. Thomas Aquinas)led the way in similar fashion, taking both breaststroke events in addition to the 200 IM. She won the 100 breaststroke in 1:10.33, the 200 in 2:32.64 and captured the IM in 2:16.68 by a margin of just under three seconds.
DOUBLE WINNERS
- The Judges had four swimmers win two individual events each, three men and a woman.
- Brandeis excelled in freestyle events thanks to senior Cameron Braz (Monson, Mass./Monson), junior Zach Diamond (Staten Island, N.Y./Staten Island Academy) and sophomore Kylie Herman (Weston, Fla./Cypress Bay).
- For the men, Braz won the 100 free (49.17 seconds) and the 200 (1:48.94)
- Diamond took the 1000 free (10:08.40) and the 500 (4:58.29)
- On the women's side, Herman won the 500 free (5:35.68) and the 200 (2:00.17).
- Edan's younger brother, rookie Tamir Zitelny (Syosset, N.Y./Syosset) swept the backstroke events, claiming the 100 in 54.20 seconds and the 200 in 1:57.48.
SINGLE WINNERS
- Three rookies earned single wins for Brandeis.
- Sprinter Yvette Smith (Gainesville, Fla./Gainesville) captured the 100 freestyle in 55.93 seconds.
- Swimming in her home state, Hwanhee Park (Cumberland, Maine/Greeley) took the women's 100 butterfly in 1:01.49
- Jake Avery (Harwich Port, Mass. / Nauset Regional) touched first in the 200 breaststroke with a time of 2:19.08.
RELAYS
- The women's 200 medley relay team of junior Amy Sheinhait (Framingham, Mass./Framingham), Wozab, Park and Smith opened the meet with a win by posting a time of 1:53.02. It was the fastest time in the event at Brandeis under head coach Mike Kotch and just under half a second off the school record.
- For the men, the 200 medley squad of Edan Zitelny, junior Richard Avrutsky (Needham, Mass./Needham), Tamir Zitelny and Braz won in 1:38.59.
- The men also captured the 400 free relay with the quartet of rookie Thomas Alger(Plymouth, Mass./Sacred Heart Acad.), Diamond, junior Taku Harada (Henrico, Va./Mills E Godwin) and Braz posting a time of 3:20.18.
