KINGSTON, R.I. -- Brandeis swimming and diving rookie Tamir Zitelny (Syosset, N.Y./Syosset) won the New England Intercollegiate Swimming and Diving Association title in the 200-yard backstroke on the second day of competition at the meet held at the University of Rhode Island.
Zitelny lowered his own school record in the event with a time of 1:51.70, winning the race by more than three seconds. The Judges had three other top scorers in the event, with rookie Daniel Haid (Robbins, N.C. / International School of Lausanne) coming in fourth (1:58.46), junior Taku Harada (Henrico, Va./Mills E Godwin) placing sixth (2:02.20) and rookie Thomas Alger (Plymouth, Mass./Sacred Heart) taking eighth (2:03.11).
Zitelny's older brother Edan was the runner up in the 100-yard butterfly with a time of 52.34 seconds.
Junior Richard Avrutsky (Needham, Mass. / Needham) turned in a second-place finish in the 50-yard breaststroke with a mark of 27.39 seconds.
First-year Noah Ayers (San Diego, Calif./Torrey Pines) was fifth in the 500 free in 4:54.11, lowering his time from the prelims by three seconds.
In the men's 200 individual medley, rookie Matt Arcemont (Santa Ana, Calif./Mater Dei) finished fifth in 1:59.93, while Harada was seventh in 2:04.79.
In relay action, Tamir Zitelny, Avrtusky, Edan Zitelny and senior Cameron Braz (Monson, Mass./Monson) placed third overall in the 400 medley with a time of 3:32.40, while Haid, Arcemont, Tamir Zitelny and Braz were fourth in the 200 free relay in 1:28.33.
The top performance on the women's side came from sophomore Kylie Herman (Weston, Fla./Cypress Bay) who was in fourth place in the 500 free with a time of 5:19.86.
Rookie Natalya Wozab (Plantation, Fla./St. Thomas Aquinas) was also fourth in the 200 individual medley in 2:15.74, while sophomore Sabrina Greer (Greensboro, N.C./Greensboro Day School) was eighth in 2:22.98.
Junior Amy Sheinhait (Framingham, Mass./Framingham) turned in a sixth-place finish in the 50 free with a time of 25.57 seconds.
The two women's relays on the evening also finished in fourth place. The 200 free team of Sheinhait, junior Abby Damsky (New York, N.Y./Brearly School), Wozab and Yvette Smith (Gainesville, Fla./Gainesville) swam 1:41.88, while the rookie team of Phillipa Zheku (Woburn, Mass./Woburn Memorial), Wozab, Park and Smith swam 4:10.85 in the 400 medley relay.
On the first night of action, the Brandeis women broke their third relay record of the year, as the quartet of rookie Hwanhee Park (Cumberland, Maine/Greely), Sheinhait, rookie Fallon Katz (Sarasota, Fla. / Pine View) and Herman became the first group to swim under eight minutes with a time of 7:57.76. The Judges finished in third place.
The men's 800 free relay place fourth with a time of 7:15.42. The team was made up of Harada and first-years Alger, Arcemont and Ayers.
After Day 2, the Brandeis men were in third place with 249 points, while the women were fourth with 355 points.
