Goldblatt sets school records in 50 & 100 butterfly

ATLANTA, Ga. – On the third day of action at the 2018 University Athletic Association swimming and diving championships at Emory University, the Brandeis University swimming and diving teams put eight swimmers into the evening's finals, including four swimmers who will advance to the 'B' Finals races. The Judges also set two school records in one race.

SCHOOL RECORDS

  • Leading the way with her two school records was rookie Rachel Goldblatt (Atlanta, GA / Galloway School). Swimming in her hometown, Goldblatt finished in 17th place in the 100-yard butterfly with a time of 58.19 seconds, lowering her own mark by more than a second. Goldblatt also set the school record in the 50 fly in the process, swimming the first lap in 26.97 seconds. Goldblatt just missed a berth in the top 16 and the 'B' final by two-hundredths of a second.

'B' FINALISTS

  • Sophomore Tamir Zitelny (Syosset, N.Y./Syosset) reached two 'B' finals in his first two individual events. He placed 10th in the 100-yard backstroke with a time of 51.42 seconds and 15th in the 100 butterfly with a time of 50.74 seconds. He will try to break his school records in both events later tonight.
  • Rookie Daniel Wohl (Chapel Hill, N.C. / East Chapel Hill) turned in a 13th-place finish in the 200-yard freestyle with a time of 1:42.02.
  • Classmate Richard Selznick (Las Vegas, Nev./Palos Verde) was 16th in the 400-yard individual medley with the third-fastest swim in school history, 4:08.53.

100 BREASTSTROKE

  • The Judges got three swimmers – two men and one woman – into the 'C' finals of the 100-yard breaststroke. Senior Richard Avrutsky (Needham, Mass. / Needham) was 19th overall in 59.41 seconds, third on the all-time list.
  • Rookie Lance Babcock (Round Rock, Texas / Round Rock) also swam into the finals with a time of 1:12.50, good for 23rd overall.
  • Rookie Emily McGovern (Chatham, N.J. / Chatham) reached the finals on the women's side with a time of 1:09.29, the fifth-fastest in school history.

NEAR MISSES

  • Two Brandeis swimmers finished just out of the top 24.
  • Rookie Annie Huang (Chapel Hill, N.C. / East Chapel Hill) just missed the finals in the 100 breaststroke, finishing 0.47 behind McGovern for the final slot with a time of 1:09.66.
  • Sophomore Daniel Haid (Robbins, N.C. / International School of Lausanne) was two-hundredths of a second out of the finals in the 100 butterfly with a mark of 53.54 seconds, the fifth-fastest in school history.
