CHICAGO, Ill. – The Brandeis University swimming and diving teams concluded the 2019 University Athletic Association championships today with five individuals scoring points, breaking their 11th school record of the meet in the process.
The top performance of the day came from sophomore Daniel Wohl (Chapel Hill, N.C./East Chapel Hill), who broke a 15-year-old school record in the 100-yard freestyle. After earning a spot in the 'B' finals with a time of 46.67 seconds, Wohl won the evening race to finish in ninth place with a time of 45.78 seconds. He broke the school record held by Chris Pai of 46.12 that had stood since 2004.
Sophomore Richard Selznick (Las Vegas, Nev./Palos Verde) also scored for the men in the 1,650-yard freestyle. He was not able to break his second record of the meet, but finished the mile in 16:34.15, good for 20th place.
On the women's side, the Judges' top event on the final day of action was the 200-yard butterfly, where the squad put two swimmers into the evening action. Senior Kylie Herman (Weston, Fla./Cypress Bay) and rookie Gazelle Umbay (North Hills, CA / Sierra Canyon School) each qualified for the 'C' final. Herman finished in 19th place with a time of 2:14.20, while Umbay's mark of 2:14.59 was good for 21st place. In the prelims, Umbay swam 2:13.09, the fifth-fastest time in program history.
Junior Matthew Arcemont (Santa Ana, Calif. / Mater Dei) rounded out the scoring for the Judges in the men's 200 fly with a time of 1:58.51 good for 24th place.
The meet concluded with the 400-free relays. The women placed eighth with a time of 3:39.79 represented by the team of rookies Lauren Howard (Abington, Mass. / Cardinal Spellman), Claire Xu (East Hanover, NJ / Newark Academy), sophomore Uajda Musaka (Winthrop, Mass./Winthrop) and senior Herman.
The men posted a time of 3:10.39 in their 400 free relay. The squad consisted of junior Tamir Zitelny (Syosset, N.Y./Syosset) and sophomores Chase Chen (Villanova, Penn. / The Hill School), Marcelo Ohno-Machado (San Diego, Calif. / Torrey Pines) and Selznick.
In the final team standings, the Brandeis men finished with 476.5 points, just 11.5 point behind Rochester in eighth place. This marks the second year in a row that the Judges have posted their largest point total since 2010. On the women's side, the Judges tallied 325 points and finished in eighth behind Rochester.
Overall for the meet, Brandeis swimmers set 11 school records. The Judges wrap up their season next weekend with the New England Intercollegiate Swimming and Diving Association championships at MIT.
