Brandeis puts three on All-UAA tennis teams

WALTHAM, Mass. – Three sophomore members of the Brandeis men's and women's tennis teams have earned All-University Athletic Association (UAA) honors. Simon Miller of Plantation, Fla., was a second-team All-UAA selection at No. 3 singles for the men's squad, while Mackenzie Gallegos of Friendswood, Texas, and Rachel Rosman of Bonita Springs, Fla., were second-team choices at No. 1 doubles.

Miller went 3-0 in singles action at the UAA men's championships, held April 17-19 at the University of Rochester. He was the only Brandeis player to go unbeaten in singles action over the weekend. His biggest win was a 7-6 (7-2), 6-4 victory over Danny Levy of Washington University, the eventual UAA champions, in an 8-1 loss. Miller also defeated Calvin Chou of NYU in a marathon, 6-2, 6-7 (4-7), 6-2, to even the match at 4-4, before the Judges ultimately fell, 5-4. In the seventh-place match, Miller took a 6-2, 6-1, victory over Brian Schmeer of host Rochester, as Brandeis fell to the Yellowjackets, 5-3. Miller also teamed with senior Scott Schulman of Wethersfield, Conn., to go 2-1 at No. 1 doubles in the UAA tournament, with wins over NYU, 8-2, and Rochester, 8-5.

Overall this season, Miller tied for the team lead in victories with a 12-12 record. Since settling in at the No. 3 singles position, Miller posted a 7-3 record. He and Schulman played more matches together than anyone on the squad, going 12-13 overall, 9-10 in the No. 1 position. Overall as team, the Brandeis men posted a 7-13 record, finishing in eighth place in the UAA.

On the women's side, Brandeis hosted the UAA championships from April 24-26. Gallegos and Rosman were one of only two teams to go undefeated at No. 1 doubles. Their biggest win was an 8-6 win over Kocemba and Waller of 14th-ranked Washington University in a 7-2 loss. Gallegos and Rosman also dispatched Chambers and Worwag of Case Western Reserve University, 8-4, in a 9-0 win, and Stachtiaris and Tu of rival NYU in a 5-3 loss in the fifth-place match.

Overall this season, Gallegos and Rosman were the Judges' top doubles team, going 10-3 at No. 1. Individually, they were also the top two performers on the squad, as Rosman posted an impressive 21-5 record at No. 1 singles and Gallegos was 15-8, including a 12-6 record at No. 4 singles. They helped Brandeis to an 11-9 record overall and sixth-place finish in the UAA.

Miller is a 2007 graduate of Plantation High School. He is the son of Steve and Amy Miller of Plantation, Fla.

Gallegos is a 2007 graduate of Friendswood High School. She is the daughter of Juan and Marie Gallegos of Friendswood, Texas.

Rosman is a 2007 graduate of Estero High School. She is the daughter of Jay and Cathy Rosman of Bonita Springs, Fla.
