Rosman wins twice, but Judges fall to No. 14 WashU

WALTHAM, Mass. - The fifth-seeded Brandeis University women's tennis team got two points out of its number-one spots in the line-up, but it wasn't enough as the Judges fell to 14th-ranked and fourth-seeded Washington University, 7-2, in the first round of the University Athletic Association championships, hosted by Brandeis at Brandeis and Wellesley College.

The Judges trailed, 2-1, after doubles action. The sophomore tandem of Mackenzie Gallegos (Friendswood, Texas/Friendswood) and Rachel Rosman (Bonita Springs, Fla./Estero) got on the board for the Judges with an 8-6 win at No. 1. The duo jumped out to a 7-2 lead on WashU's Karina Kocemba and Erin Swaller, but the Bear tandem won four in a row to climb back in to the match. Gallegos and Rosman answered with a break to earn the victory. In singles action, Rosman topped Kocemba on her own, 6-1, 6-4, for Brandeis's only singles point. Washington won three of their five singles matches without dropping a game. Gallegos pushed Elise Sambol to a third set before succumbing, 6-2, 4-6, 6-2, at No. 4.

The Judges were the only lower seed to win a match in the UAA tournament today. Top-seeded and third-ranked Carnegie Mellon, second-seeded and fourth-ranked Emory and third-seeded and fifth-ranked Chicago won by 9-0 scores over No. 8 Case, No. 7 NYU and No. 6 Rochester, respectively.

Brandeis will meet Case tomorrow at 8:30 a.m. in the consolation semifinals, while NYU and Rochester will face off at the same time. The winners will meet at 3:30 for fifth place, while the losers will play for seventh. CMU takes on Washington and Chicago and Emory meet in the championship semifinals at noon tomorrow, with the third-place and championship matches taking place at 9 a.m. on Sunday morning.
