Women's tennis opens season with 8-1 win over Wheaton

NORTON, Mass. --  A pair of newcomers to the line-up, rookie Faith Broderick (Washingtonville, N.Y./Washingtonville) and sophomore Sarah Richman (Sewickley, Pa./Quaker Valley), combined for three points as the Brandeis University women's tennis team defeated Wheaton College, 8-1. The Judges, ranked No. 14 in the East, won their first match of 2009-10, while the Lyons, ranked 12th in the region, fell to 2-1 on the campaign.

Broderick made her collegiate debut teaming with Richman, who saw limited action as a rookie, at No. 2 doubles, where they earned an 8-4 victory. Along with a win from the tandem of senior Ariana Sanai (Hopewell Junction, N.Y./John Jay) and sophomore Nina Levine (Westport, Conn./Staples), the Judges carried a 2-1 lead into doubles action. The Wheaton junior tandem of Sarah Geocaris (Newport Beach, Calif./Sage Hill School) and Catherine Teague (Manchester, N.H./Central) provided the hosts with their lone win, a hard-fought 9-8 victory at first doubles.

In singles action, Broderick lost the first set at No. 2, but bounced back to earn a 2-6, 6-2, 6-2 win. Richman, who played No. 4 on two occasions last season, earned the Judges' easiest with with a 6-1, 6-0 victory at No. 6. Junior Rachel Rosman (Bonita Springs, Fla./Estero) also took a three-set win at No. 1, 6-3, 2-6, 6-2, while classmate Mackenzie Gallegos (Friendswood, Texas/Friendswood) needed a super-tiebreaker for her victory at No. 4, 6-4, 2-6, 10-4.

The Judges are next scheduled to take on Bowdoin College on Saturday at 2:30 p.m.
