WHITTIER, Calif. -- The Brandeis University women's tennis team, ranked No. 28 in Division III, defeated host Whittier College, 6-3, to kick off their spring season. The Judges improve to 3-0 overall on the campaign, while the Poets fall to 1-1.
Brandeis fell behind early, dropping an 8-3 decision at No. 2 doubles, but rookies Roberta Bergstein (Hingham, Mass./Hingham) and Alexa Katz (Philadelphia, Pa./Abington Friends) earned an 8-2 win to knot the score at 1-all. Senior Rachel Rosman (Bonita Springs, Fla./Estero) and sophomore Faith Broderick (Washingtonville, N.Y./Washingtonville) gave the Judges the edge headed into singles with an 8-5 win at No. 1 doubles.
In singles action, the top of the lineup took care of business quickly to clinch the match. Rosman lost just two games at No. 1, 6-2, 6-0, and classmate Mackenzie Gallegos (Friendswood, Texas/Friendswood) won 6-2, 6-1, at No. 3 to put the Judges on the brink of victory. Broderick clinched the win, 6-4, 6-2, at No. 2, while junior Nina Levine (Westport, Conn./Staples) closed out the scoring for the Judges with a 3-6, 6-2, 6-1 rally at No. 6. The Poets earned the last two points of the match at Nos. 4 and 5 with a pair of come-from-behind three-set wins.
Brandeis returns to action in California on Wednesday against the University of Redlands.
