MIDDLEBURY, Vt. -- The Brandeis women's tennis team, ranked 26th in the nation, had an easy time against University Athletic Association rival NYU tonight, as the Judges defeated the Violets, 8-1, at the Middlebury Invitational. Brandeis wins its seventh-straight match to start the season, while NYU drops its first dual match of the campaign.
Brandeis got off to a quick start by taking all three doubles matches. After easy wins at No. 1 and No. 3, the Judges completed the sweep thanks to a late break at No. 2 by sophomore Alexa Katz (Philadelphia, Pa/Abington Friends) and senior Nina Levine (Westport, Conn./Staples) to earn a 9-7 win over NYU's Megan Moore and Ramya Pokala.
In singles action, junior Faith Broderick (Washingtonville, N.Y./Washingtonville) cruised to victory at No. 2 without dropping a game, 6-0, 6-0, over Hanna Balu. After sophomore Allyson Bernstein (Northbrook, Ill./Glenbrook North) clinched the match, 6-0, 6-3, over Pokala at third singles, rookie Carley Cooke (San Diego, Calif./Point Loma) earned a 6-3, 6-4, win over Mari Tzakis at No. 1.
With the match in hand, head coach Ben Lamanna was able to get extra time for some of his players lower down in the lineup. Rookie Jill Martin (Atlanta, Ga./Lovejoy) rewarded the decision with a 6-0, 6-1, win over Katie Andrew at sixth singles in her first collegiate dual-match. Classmate Simone Vandroff (Moss Beach, Calif./Half Moon Bay) improved to 5-0 this season with a 6-2, 6-3, win over Moore at No. 4 singles, her highest slot on the ladder. The Violets' lone point came at No. 5 singles, where Alexandra Ziarko defeated Judge sophomore Marissa Lazar (Hewlett, N.Y./Lynbrook), 6-3, 6-1.
The next day, the Judges suffered their first loss of the season, dropping a 9-0 decision to host Middlebury, the No. 10 team in Division III. Cooke suffered her first dual-match loss of the season at No. 1, 6-3, 6-3, to another rookie, Lok-Sze Leung. Broderick had the closest loss of the match against the Panthers at No. 2, falling in a third-set super tiebreaker, 6-4, 5-7, 10-8, to Leah Kepping.
