BABSON PARK, Mass. (courtesy Babson College sports information) -- The 19th-ranked Brandeis University women's tennis team got off to their best start since the 1985-86 season with an 8-1 win over host Babson College today. The Judges are now 10-1 on the campaign, while the Beavers fall to 11-5.

The Judges jumped out to an early 2-1 lead with a pair of doubles victories. Rookie Carley Cooke (San Diego, Calif./Point Loma) and junior Faith Broderick (Washingtonville, N.Y./Washingtonville) won their match at number one, 8-2, while rookies Dylan Schlesinger (Miami, Fla./Miami Palmetto) and Simone Vandroff (Moss Beach, Calif./Half Moon Bay) prevailed at three, 8-4. The combination of Babson senior captains Rebecca Stone (Dover, Mass.) and Ashley Lake (Brockton, Mass.) secured what would prove to be the Beavers' only point of the afternoon at two, where they earned an impressive 8-1 victory.

Brandeis swept the six singles matches, although four of the six were closely-contested affairs. The two easiest wins for the Judges came at number one, where Cooke coasted, 6-1, 6-1, and at three, where sophomore Allyson Bernstein (Northbrook, Ill./Glenbrook North) cruised, 6-0, 6-1. At two, Broderick outdueled Babson sophomore Sarah Whitaker (Dellwood, Minn.), 6-2, 6-5 (4), while at four, the Judges' Alexa Katz (Philadelphia, Pa./Abington Friends) took two tough sets from first-year Minte Tamoshunas (Pittsford, N.Y.), 7-6 (1), 7-5. The final two singles matchups went to third-set superbreakers, with Brandeis' Roberta Bergstein (Hingham, Mass./Hingham) topping first-year Courtney Fischer (Greenwich, Conn.), 2-6, 7-5, 1-0 (10-2) at five and Vandroff edging Beavers' junior Victoria Lorido (Miami, Fla.), 4-6, 6-2, 1-0 (10-4), at six
