WALTHAM, Mass. -- The Brandeis women's tennis team, ranked No. 20 in the most recent Intercollegiate Tennis Association Division III poll, dropped its second-straight match to another nationally-ranked team today, falling to 28th-ranked Trinity (Conn.), 6-3.
The Judges (13-4) and Bantams (9-4) split the first two doubles matches. Brandeis junior Faith Broderick (Washingtonville, N.Y./Washingtonville) and rookie Carley Cooke (San Diego, Calif./Point Loma) won, 8-4, at No. 1, while Trinity's Frances Cameron (Mill Valley, Calif./Marin Acad.) and Kelsey Semrod (Princeton, N.J./Stuart CDS) earned an 8-2 decision at No. 2. At third doubles, the visitors gained momentum with a late break of serve to give Regan Cherna (Bronxville, N.Y./Kent, Conn., School) and Elizabeth Gerber (Bethesda, Md./Stone Ridge) a 9-7 victory over Brandeis rookies Dylan Schlesinger (Miami, Fla./Palmetto) and Simone Vandroff (Moss Valley, Calif./Half Moon Bay).
Trinity carried the momentum into singles action. At the top two spots, two Bantams avenged their singles losses, as Hillary Hoyt (New York, N.Y./Deerfield, Mass., Acad.) topped Cooke at No. 1, 6-0, 7-5, while Senzosihle Mauve-Maphisa (Bulawo, Zimbabwe/Dominican Convent) topped Broderick, 6-2, 6-3, at No. 2. Brandeis sophomore Allyson Bernstein (Northbrook, Ill./Glenbrook North) earned a point for the Judges at No. 3 with a 6-4, 6-3 win, while classmate Roberta Bergstein (Hingham, Mass./Hingham) won her team-high fourth-straight match at No. 6, 6-4, 6-1, to keep the hosts alive at 4-3. Trinity went on to win the final two matches with a pair of tiebreakers in the second set,with Semrod defeating Vandroff, 6-2, 7-6 (9-7) at No. 4 and Gerber topping Brandeis sophomore Alexa Katz (Philadelphia, Pa./Abington Friends), 6-3, 7-6 (7-2) at No. 5.
Brandeis returns to action with the University Athletic Association championships later this week at Orlando, Florida. The fifth-seeded Judges, who are now 4-4 on the season against nationally-ranked squads, will take on fourth-seeded and 13th-ranked Washington (Mo.) University in the opening round on Friday at 1:30 p.m.
