ALTAMONTE SPRINGS, Fla. -- The Brandeis women's tennis team took advantage of a shorthanded NYU squad to advance to the fifth-place match at the 2012 University Athletic Association tournament with a 9-0 win. With their top players rested, the Judges were able to defeat Rochester, 6-3, in that fifth place match. With the win, the Judges close the regular season with a 15-5 record, their highest win total in 30 years.

With NYU only fielding four players, the Judges were able to move some of their players up in the singles lineup. Sophomore Allyson Bernstein (Northbrook, Ill./Glenbrook North) routed her opponent at No. 1 singles, 6-1, 6-0. Classmate Alexa Katz (Philadelphia, Pa./Abington Friends) won her second set in a tiebreaker, 6-3, 7-6 (7-2), at second singles. Brandeis won a pair of third-set super-tiebreakers to take victories at No. 3 and 4, with Dylan Schlesinger (Miami, Fla./Palmetto) emerging with a 6-2, 3-6, 10-6 win and sophomore Marissa Lazar (Hewlett, N.Y./Lynbrook) rallying from a set downto take a 1-6, 6-2, 10-8 win.

In the fifth place match, against Rochester, the Judges were looking to match the 1980-81 squad that went 15-1 as the only two squads in school history to win 15 matches in a season. Brandeis jumped out to a 2-1 lead in doubles action as rookies Dylan Schlesinger (Miami, Fla./Palmetto) and Simone Vandroff (Moss Beach, Calif./Half Moon Bay) took an 8-5 decision at No. 3, while classmate Carley Cooke (San Diego, Calif./Point Loma) and junior Faith Broderick (Washingtonville, N.Y./Washingtonville) won at No. 1, 8-6, to improve to 14-5 on the season as a team.

In singles action, the Judges won four of six matches, with Cooke and Broderick taking advantage of the rest they got from the morning session to outlast their opponents in three sets. Cooke finished her rookie campaign at 15-4 in dual matches with a 4-6, 6-4, 6-2 win over Frances Tseng at No. 1, while Broderick's 3-6, 7-5, 6-2, win at No. 2 gave her a 14-3 record in 2011-12. Bernstein and Vandroff earned straight-set wins at third and fourth singles to help clinch the win for the Judges. Bernstein, who earned the additional win against NYU, finished with a team-best 16 wins for the Judges this season.
