Women's tennis bows to Tufts in season opener

MEDFORD, Mass. -- In their first match of the 2012-13 season, the Brandeis women's tennis team dropped a 9-0 decision to Tufts University. The Judges (0-1) were ranked 22nd in the final Intercollegiate Tennis Association poll of 2011-12, while the Jumbos (2-0) were 14th.

Brandeis lost three singles matches in third-set super tiebreakers. Sophomore All-American Carley Cooke (San Diego, Calif./Point Loma) dropped her opener at No. 1 singles to Lindsay Katz after winning the first set, 4-6, 6-3, 10-4. Senior Faith Broderick (Washingtonville, N.Y./Washingtonville) lost her tiebreaker to Samantha Gann by the same score after taking the second set, 6-4, 2-6, 10-4.  The duo were also upset at No. 1 doubles, 8-5, by Katz and Shelci Bowman. Rookie Maya Vasser also lost in the third set at No. 6 singles, 3-6, 7-5, 10-3, to Katherine Worley of the Jumbos.

The Judges return to action next weekend in the ITA regionals at MIT.
