Women's tennis sweeps Simmons, 9-0

BOSTON, Mass. -- Despite playing without senior Faith Broderick (Washingtonville, N.Y./Washingtonville) in the second position, the Brandeis women's tennis team still completed a sweep of Simmons College, 9-0, to improve to 1-1 in the fall portion of their schedule. 

The Judges were led by sophomore All-American Carley Cooke (San Diego, Calif./Point Loma), who earned a 6-2, 6-0, win at No. 1 singles and teamed with junior Allyson Bernstein (Northbrook, Ill./Glenbrook North) for an 8-4 victory at No. 1 doubles. 

In other doubles action, sophomore Simone Vandroff (Moss Beach, Calif. / Half Moon Bay) paired with rookie Maya Vasser (New Rochelle, N.Y./New Rochelle) for an 8-5 win at No. 2, while junior Roberta Bergstein (Hingham, Mass./Hingham) and sophomore Dylan Schlesinger (Miami, Fla./Palmetto) were 8-4 winners at No. 3.

After Cooke helped move the match towards decision at the top spot, Vandroff took a 6-3, 6-4 decision at No. 2 and Vasser was a 6-3, 6-4 winner at No. 3.

Several Brandeis players saw their first singles action of the season. Junior Alexa Katz (Philadelphia, Pa. / Abington Friends) stepped in at No. 4 to take a 6-0, 6-2, decision. A pair of rookies, Sarita Biswas (Bedford, Mass./Bedford) at No. 5 and Emily Eska (Princeton, Mass./Wachusett Regional) were both 6-3, 6-3, winners in their first collegiate dual match action. 

The Judges conclude the fall portion of their schedule this weekend at the New England championships.
