SOUTH HADLEY, Mass. -- The Brandeis University women's tennis team wrapped up the fall portion of its season at the New England Women's Intercollegiate Tennis Tournament. One of the oldest collegiate women's tennis tournaments in the nation, the NEWITT is contested with two-player teams from schools playing three-point matches with the two players teaming up in doubles and then facing off in a pair of singles matches. 

The top performance of the weekend came from junior Alexa Katz (Philadelphia, Pa./Abington Friends) and rookie Sarita Biswas (Beford, Mass./Bedford) playing the B flight of the tournament, where they advanced to the quarterfinals. They opened against the team of Dubin and Couchoe from Smith College, and Biswas was nearly beatable. In doubles action, the Judges won, 8-0, and Biswas took a 6-0, 6-1 decision from Couchoe in singles, while Katz was a 6-2, 7-6 (7-2) winner. They then advanced past the Mount Holyoke duo of Holloschutz and Nguyen with another sweep. Brandeis took the doubles, 8-2, and Katz downed Holloschutz, 6-2, 7-5. Biswas completed the 3-0 win by outlasting Nguyen, 2-6, 7-5, 10-8 in a supertiebreaker. The Judges fell in the quarters to Trinity's Wilkins and Gerber, 8-2 in doubles, with Katz falling 7-5, 6-3, to Gerber and Biswas suffering a 6-1, 6-0, loss to Wilkins.

For the Judges' top pairing of sophomore Carley Cooke (San Diego, Calif./Point Loma) and junior Allyson Bernstein (Northbrook, Ill./Glenbrook North), the pair were upset by a squad from Tufts, Lam and Hollander. Brandeis captured the doubles match, 8-6, but both singles matches were won by the Jumbos in a third-set super-tiebreaker. Cooke couldn't finish Hollander in a 3-6, 6-4, 10-7 decision, while Bernstein tried to rally but fell short against Lam, 6-2, 3-6, 10-7. After a walkover in the consolation bracket opening round against Salve Regina, the Judges turned the tables on Sung and Pol from Amherst, bouncing back after dropping the doubles, 8-5. Cooke defeated Sung, 6-1, 6-3, while Bernstein swept Pol, 7-5, 6-2. In the consolation semis against Paradies and Macy from Middlebury, the Panthers took the doubles point, 8-5, while Cooke defeated Paradies, 8-2, in a 10-game pro-set, but Bernstein fell to Macy, 8-4, in a similar set.
