WALTHAM, Mass. -- With their opponents playing shorthanded, the 26th-ranked Brandeis University women's tennis team had little trouble with 27th-ranked Wellesley College, winning by a 9-0 score.

Brandeis (7-5) needed to win just two matches, as Wellesley (8-8) had only four players able to make the trip to Waltham. The Judges put the match away after doubles competition, as senior Faith Broderick (Washingtonville, N.Y./Washingtonville) and sophomore Carley Cooke (San Diego, Calif./Point Loma) were 8-4 winners at No. 1, while junior Roberta Bergstein (Hingham, Mass./Hingham) and sophomore Simone Vandroff (Moss Beach, Calif./Half Moon Bay) took an 8-3 decision at No. 2. With the Blue having to default at No. 3 doubles and 5th and 6th singles, the match was effectively over at that point.

In singles action, Cooke made for Brandeis's only double winner, taking a 7-5, 6-1 decision at No. 1. Junior Allyson Bernstein (Northbrook, Ill./Glenbrook North) routed her opponent at No. 2, 6-1, 6-1. A pair of rookies rounded out the victors, with Maya Vasser (New Rochelle, N.Y./New Rochelle) surviving the only three-set match of the day, 4-6, 6-1 and 10-5 in a super tiebreaker in the third at No. 3 singles. Sarita Biswas (Bedford, Mass./Bedford) rolled at No. 4, 6-1, 6-2, to close out the victory for the Judges.

Brandeis returns to action Saturday at 11 a.m. against MIT, while Wellesley heads to Vassar College in Poughkeepsie, N.Y., for the Seven Sisters tournament.
