WALTHAM, Mass. -- In their final two matches before the 2013 University Athletic Association championships, the Brandeis women's tennis team earned a split. On Saturday afternoon on the road, the 24th-ranked Judges fell at No. 8 Bowdoin College, 8-1. Brandeis bounced back to defeat Division I Holy Cross, 8-1, in the final regular seaosn home match for senior Faith Broderick (Washingtonville, N.Y./Washingtonville).

Against Bowdoin, Broderick and doubles teammate sophomore Carley Cooke (San Diego, Calif./Point Loma) picked up an 8-4 win at No. 1. Unfortunately, the Judges could not grab any further matches. They nearly earned a second doubles point, but junior Roberta Bergstein (Hingham, Mass./Hingham) and sophomore Simone Vandroff (Moss Beach, Calif./Half Moon Bay) suffered a late break, falling 9-7 to Tiffany Cheng and Emma Lewis of the Polar Bears. In singles action, Cooke battled Bowdoin's Kellen Alberstone, taking the first set, 6-4, before falling 6-1, 6-1.

In the final home match against Division I Holy Cross, the Judges cruised, only dropping one game in each doubles match and winning nine of the 10 sets in their singles wins with only zero or one game lost. Broderick and Cooke rolled at No. 1 doubles and Broderick won 6-1, 6-1 at No. 1 singles to earn her 103rd career victory in singles and doubles combined. Also picking up singles points for the Judges were junior Allyson Bernstein (Northbrook, Ill./Glenbrook North), who won 6-1, 6-0 at No. 2; rookie Maya Vasser (New Rochelle, N.Y. / New Rochelle) a 6-4, 6-1 winner at No. 3; junior Alexa Katz (Philadelphia, Pa./Abington Friends) at No. 4 by a 6-1, 6-0 score; and rookie Emily Eska (Princeton, Mass. / Wachusett Regional) at No. 5, 6-1, 6-1.

Brandeis will learn its seed in the University Athletic Association tournament this week. The Judges will take an 8-8 record into the tournament.
