#25 women's tennis gets past #31 Chapman, 7-2

ORANGE, Calif. -- The Brandeis University women's tennis team, ranked 25th in Division III, knocked off 31st-ranked Chapman University last night, 7-2. The Judges pick up their first win of the season and move to 1-1, while the Panthers dropped their season opener. 

The Judges took a 2-1 lead in doubles play. Rookie Haley Cohen (Cherry Hill, N.J. / Laurel Springs) and senior All-American Carley Cooke (San Diego, Calif./Point Loma) knocked off the Panthers' All-American doubles duo of Andrea Hammer and Rachel Fox, 8-2, in the top spot. Senior Simone Vandroff (Moss Beach, Calif./Half Moon Bay) and junior Maya Vasser (New Rochelle, N.Y. / New Rochelle) took an 8-5 decision at No. 2. The home team got on the board at No. 3, where Sophia Duons and Maddie Saunders held off Judge rookie Charlotte Aaron (Phoenix, Ariz./Arcadia) and junior Sarita Biswas (Bedford, Mass. / Bedford), 8-6.

In singles action, the Judges took five of six matches. Cooke rolled over Hammer at No. 1, 6-2, 6-1, but it was Vandroff who had the easiest time at No. 4, cruising to a 6-1, 6-0 win. Cohen (6-2, 7-5, at No. 2) and Vasser (6-3, 6-4, at No. 5) each were double winners, while junior Hannah Marion (Hillsborough, N.C./Cedar Ridge) picked up her first win of the season, 6-2, 6-4, at No. 6.

The Judges have a day off on Thursday before continuing their California trip at No. 20 Redlands on Friday and No. 15 LaVerne on Saturday.
