MEDFORD, Mass. -- The Brandeis women's tennis team, ranked 28th in Division III, got wins at the top of the singles and doubles lineup, but the Judges dropped a 7-2 decision to 19th-ranked Tufts on Friday evening.

Brandeis's two wins came courtesy senior All-American Carley Cooke (San Diego, Calif./Point Loma). The Judges, who had been swept in their three prior losses, got their first point at No. 1 doubles as Cooke and rookie Haley Cohen (Cherry Hill, N.J./Laurel Springs) got a late break of serve to defeat Conner Calabro and Lauren Louks, 9-7. Cooke added a singles win over Calabro, 7-6 (7-2), 6-3, for the team's other point.

The Judges had chances to pick up points at fourth and fifth singles after taking a pair of first sets. At No. 4, junior Emily Eska (Princeton, Mass./Wachusett Regional) rolled in the opening set, 6-0, against the Jumbos' Chelsea Hayashi. Hayashi responded by taking the next two 6-2, 6-4. At No. 5, classmate Maya Vasser (New Rochelle, N.Y./New Rochell) took the first set, 6-4, but it was Tufts' Jacqueline Baum who prevailed in two tiebreakers, 7-6 (7-4) in the second and 10-4 in a super tiebreaker in the third.

Brandeis (1-7) dropped its sixth match of the season to a team ranked ahead of them in the ITA Division III rankings. The Judges meet #40 Bates Saturday in Lewiston, Maine.

Tufts (3-2) won its home opener.
