#28 Women's tennis opens season with loss to DI Bryant University

SMITHFIELD, R.I .—  The #28 Brandeis women's tennis team got their 2016 spring season going on Saturday against Division I Bryant University. The Judges lost 6-1, with their lone win coming from freshman Keren Khromchenko (Manalapan, N.J. / Acad. of Allied Health and Science).

Under Division I rules, the winner of more doubles matches earned one point. Each match was one regular set instead of a pro-set. The Judges lost all three doubles matches, 6-1, 6-4, 6-4.

Another difference between Division III and Division I play is the no-advantage rule. Under traditional scoring, when the score is 40-40, for one side to win the game it must win by two points. Under no-ad scoring, when the score is 40-40 the next point wins the game.

In the top-ranked singles match, sophomore Haley Cohen (Cherry Hill, N.J. / Laurel Springs) took Bryant's Ryan Brown to a tiebreaking game in the 1st set, ultimately losing the game 7-4 and the set 7-6. Brown took the second set 6-0 and swept the match. In the #4 singles, Judges' senior Emily Eska (Princeton, Mass. / Wachusett Regional) played Ashanti Campfield closely, losing 6-4, 6-4.

Brandeis' Khromchenko beat Briana Leonard 6-3, 7-5 in the #3 singles match.

The Bulldogs won the other four singles matches in straight sets to finish out the victory.

Brandeis continues their season in California over February break, playing #34 Chapman, #18 Redlands, and #4 Claremont-Mudd-Scripps.
