Cohen wins opener at ITA regionals

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – Brandeis junior Haley Cohen (Cherry Hill, N.J./Laurel Springs) earned a victory at the 2016 Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) New England regional this weekend.

Cohen opened her tournament with a 6-3, 6-0, win over Sarah Yan of Wellesley before falling to Tufts' Mina Karamercan, the seventh seed, in the second round, 6-2, 6-0. The win was Cohen's first in three trips to ITA regionals.

In other opening round action, sophomore Olivia Leavitt (Falmouth, Maine/Falmouth) went to a third set super-tiebreaker with Ines DeBracamonte of Wheaton before falling, 3-6, 6-4, 10-1.

Rookie Sabrina Ross Neergaard (Port Orchard, Wash. / Laurel Springs Prep) dropped her first collegiate match to the ninth seed from Amherst, Jackie Calla, 7-5, 6-1.

In doubles action, Cohen and sophomore Sophia He (Poughkeepsie, N.Y. / Spackenkill) fell to quarterfinalists Orozco and Puccinelli of Middlebury, 8-3, in the opening round, while Leavitt and Ross Neergaard dropped an 8-2 decision to third-seeded Likhansaia and Stalder of Bowdoin.
