WALTHAM, Mass. – The Brandeis University tennis teams completed a sweep of Trinity (Connecticut) College today in the Gosman Athletic Center. The 19th-ranked men improved to 7-2 with a 6-0 win over the Bantams, while the 20th-ranked women took an 8-1 decision in their home opener to move to 6-2 on the season.
In the second half of the doubleheader, the Brandeis women likewise got off to a fast start in doubles action. Rookie Lauren Bertsch (Middletown, R.I./LaSalle Academy) and junior Keren Khromchenko (Manalapan, N.J./ Academy of Allied Health and Science) opened the scoring at No. 2, 8-3, followed by junior Michele Lehat (Great Neck, N.Y./John L. Miller Great Neck North) and rookie Rachel Zubrinsky (Waxhaw, N.C. / Marvin Ridge) with an 8-5 win at No. 3. Senior Haley Cohen (Cherry Hill, N.J./Laurel Springs Acad.) and junior Olivia Leavitt (Falmouth, Maine/Falmouth) made it 3-0 with a late break in an 8-6 win at No. 1.
In singles action, Leavitt cruised to the Judges' fourth point with a 6-1, 6-1, win at No. 3. Trinity got its only point of the day at No. 1 with a 6-2, 6-4, win by Vanja Babunski over Cohen, avenging a doubles loss. The match was clinched at No. 4, where Bertsch picked up a quick 6-3, 6-0, win, while Khromchenko was grinding out a 6-7 (5-7) 6-3, 6-4, win at No. 2.
Lehat (8-2) and Zubrinsky (8-4) rounded out the win at Nos. 5 and 6, respectively.
In the men's match that opened the day, the Judges rolled to a 3-0 lead in doubles action. Sophomore David Aizenberg (Highland Park, Ill./Highland Park) and rookie Anupreeth Coramutla (Monroe Township, N.J./Phillips Andover) opened with an 8-4 win at No. 1, followed by rookies Nikhil Das (Smithfield, R.I. / Moses Brown School) and Rajan Vohra (Glen Head, N.Y./North Shore) with an 8-5 win at No. 3. Juniors Jackson Kogan (Pacific Palisades, Calif./Windward School) and Tyler Ng (Great Neck, N.Y./Great Neck South) finished it off at No. 2, 8-4.
The Judges completed the win at the top three singles spots. Vohra blitzed his opponent, 6-0, 6-0, at No. 3, while Aizenberg clinched the win at No. 2 with a 6-3, 6-3, victory. Kogan closed the scoring with a come-from-behind win at No. 1, taking a marathon third-set super-tiebreaker, 3-6, 6-3, 13-11. The remaining singles matches were not started or finished to give the women ample time to play their match.
The Brandeis men return to action on Thursday, March 29 against Babson, with the venue depending on the weather. The women play host to No. 8-ranked Tufts next Saturday, March 31, at 9 a.m.
