Women's tennis falls to MIT, 8-1, in home opener

WALTHAM, Mass. – The Brandeis University women's tennis team suffered an 8-1 defeat in their first home match of the 2022 season against visiting MIT. The Judges fall to 0-2 on the campaign, while the Engineers improve to 1-0.

The player of the day for the Judges was first-year Anastasia Sia (Thessaloniki, Greece / Anatolia College). She earned the team's lone point at #6 singles, defeating Irene Huang, 2-6, 6-4, 10-1 in a third-set super tiebreaker. At #2 doubles, she and classmate Sabrina Loui (Honolulu, Hawaii / Punahou School) also went to a tiebreaker, falling to MIT's Megan Guenther and Sarah Pertsemlidis, 8-7 (7-2).

MIT won the other two doubles matches by 8-4 scores. Brandeis senior Ana Hatfield (Rockford, Ill. / Boylan Central Catholic) and sophomore Ella Subramanian (Parkland, Fla. / Laurel Springs) lost at #1 to Kimberly Liao and Yuka Perera, while the team of sophomores Nikita Salkar (Mumbai, India / Mourataglou Tennis Academy) and  Jiayi Zhang (Shanghai, China / Shanghai International) fell to Annie Dong and Jessica Lu at #3.

Besides Sia's win at #6, the closest Brandeis matches came at #3, where Subramanian lost to Seraphin Castelino, 6-2, 6-2; and at #4, where Loui lost to Jessica Lu, 6-3, 6-1.

Brandeis returns to action on Sunday at 3:15 p.m. when they play host to Wellesley.
