Norton qualifies for nationals, women put three in top five at season opener

BOSTON, Mass. – In the first meet of the 2009-10 indoor track and field season, Northeastern University's Jay Carisella Track & Field Invitational, Brandeis junior Paul Norton (Amherst, Mass./Amherst Regional) qualified for his fourth career NCAA championship.

Norton finished sixth in the 5,000-meter run with a time of 14:36.45. An All-American for the first time when he finished seventh at the NCAA Division III cross country championships this fall, Norton was the second Division III finisher in the 5,000 behind a runner from Tufts. He met the provisional qualifying mark by seven seconds.

On the women's side, the Judges had three top-five finishes. Junior Lucia Capano (Manchester, N.H./Manchester Central) led the way, placing second in the triple jump behind a competitor from Division II American International with a distance of 35 feet, 11 ½ inches (10.96 meters), just two inches behind the winning distance. Capano also placed eighth in the long jump with a leap of 16 feet, 3 ¾ inches (4.97 meters). Also earning top finishes for the Judges were a pair of seniors. Julia Alpaio (Cranston, R.I./Cranston East) placed third in the 800-meter run with a time of 2:20.75, while classmate Suzanne Bernier (Hanson, Mass./Whitman-Hanson) took fifth in the high jump with a height of 5 feet, 1 ¾ inches (1.57 meters).
