Women's DMR, Holgate qualify for nationals at BU's Terrier Classic

BOSTON, Mass. -- The Brandeis University track and field teams had a pair of NCAA qualifying performances at the 2010 Terrier Classic at Boston University on Jan. 29 and 30.

On the women's side, the Brandeis distance medley relay team of senior Beth Pisarik (Chelmsford, Mass./Chelmsford), senior Julia Alpaio (Cranston, R.I./Cranston East), rookie Anifreed Sinjour (New Bedford, Mass./New Bedford) and junior Grayce Selig (Narberth, Pa./Springside School) finished second in their heat with a time of 12:03.95, behind only Division I LaSalle University. Their time is the second in the nation this season to meet the NCAA Division III provisional standard and is the fastest time currently reported.

For the Brandeis men, junior Devon Holgate (Cumberland, R.I./Cumberland) qualified in the mile run. His time of 4:14.07 was 25th overall and currently ranks him fifth in the nation. Holgate would compete at nationals for the second time in his career, having reached as a member of the men's cross country team in the fall.

The Judges have now qualified for nationals in six events. In addition to her part in the DMR, Selig had previously qualified in the mile run a week earlier at the Greater Boston Track Club Invitational at Harvard with a school-record time of 5:00.53. She currently ranks fourth in the nation. Two Brandeis student-athletes are qualified in field events, as senior Suzanne Bernier (Hanson, Mass./Whitman Hanson) is seventh in the high jump (1.67 meters), while junior Lucia Capano (Manchester, N.H./Manchester Central) is 10th in the triple jump. Both qualified for NCAAs at their home meet, the Reggie Poyau Memorial Invitational.On the men's side, Holgate joins junior Paul Norton (Amherst, Mass./Amherst Regional), who is currently ranked fifth in the nation in the 5,000-meter run.
