WALTHAM, Mass. – Four individuals and one relay for the Brandeis University outdoor track and field teams earned All-New England honors this weekend at the New England Division III championships held at MIT on Saturday, May 7. The Brandeis men placed 14th out of 31 teams that scored points, while the Judge women were 25th out of 29 scorers.
On the women's side, the Judges had a pair of All-Region performances. In the 5,000-meter run, junior Kate Warwick of Boxborough, Mass., placed sixth with a time of 17:49.42, to earn All-New England honors for the first time. Sophomore Kim Farrington of Shirley, Mass., also claimed her first All-New England accolades with an eighth-place finish in the triple jump. Her distance of 11.01 meters (36 feet, 1 ½ inches) was 5.5 inches ahead of the ninth-place finisher.
Highlighting the team's performance was junior Chris Brown of No. Chelmsford, Mass. Brown captured the New England title in the 1,500-meter run with a time of 3:52.84, just a shade less than half a second better than the runner-up in the event. His season-best time was also an NCAA Division III championship provisional qualifying time. Brown is currently ranked 18th in Division III, with the top 15 in the event earning selection to the national championship meet at Ohio Wesleyan University on May 28 and 29.
Also claiming All-New England honors for the men was rookie Vincent Asante of The Bronx, N.Y. Asante won his preliminary heat in the 100-meter dash with a time of 11.03 seconds, the fifth-fastest time in qualifying heats, but 0.23 seconds faster than his nearest competitor. He placed fourth in the finals, though times were not recorded due to a malfunction with the timing equipment.
The Brandeis men also earned All-New England honors for their 3,200-meter relay team, which finished eighth with a time of 7:59.48. Brown ran the anchor leg for the relay, with sophomore Mik Kern of Groton, N.Y., rookie Taylor Dundas of Bath, Maine, and junior Marc Boutin of Westford, Mass., running the first three legs.
