Selig earns third All-America honor with runner-up finish in the mile

COLUMBUS, Ohio -- Brandeis senior Grayce Selig (Narberth, Pa./Springside School) earned her third career All-America honor today, finishing as the runner-up in the mile run at the 2011 NCAA Division III Indoor Track and Field championships hosted by Capital University in Columbus, Ohio. Selig covered the distance in 4:58.47, 1.01 seconds behind winner Randelle Boots of Wellesley.

Selig ran much of the race in the third spot, occasionally dropping back in the pack. In the final lap, as Boots sprinted to the finish, Selig also had a kick, enabling her to stay just ahead of Keene State's Amy Knoblauch by 0.32 seconds. Selig's second-place finish at nationals is the best by a Brandeis woman since Anat Benun '09 place second in the triple jump in 2006.

In the prelims, Selig also finished second in her heat with a time of 4:59.56, again about a second behind Boots, who was the top seed in the event. Selig's prelim time was the seventh fastest, with the top five runners coming from the event's first heat.

Selig earned her third career All-America honor, having anchored last year's third-place distance medley relay indoors and placing fourth in the 1,500-meter run outdoors in 2010.

Selig's eight points tied the Judges for 27th overall, seventh among New England schools and tied with Washington University as best among UAA schools.
