MIDDLEBURY, Vt. -- The Brandeis University women's indoor track and field team had its best showing in five years at the 2016 New England Division III championships, as the Judges posted four All-New England performances with one of their biggest squads at the event in recent years, held today at Middlebury College.

The team's highest finish was turned in by rookie Emily Bryson (Quincy, Mass./No. Quincy), who placed fourth overall in the mile run with a time of 5:02.34. Her personal best time by more than four seconds, Bryson is now the top-ranked miler in the University Athletic Association and 23rd in Division III. This is her second career All-New England honor to go with her honor in cross country season. Bryson is also nationally-ranked in the 3,000-meter run, where she is 12th nationally.

Right behind Bryson today was junior Maddie Dolins (Highland Park, Ill./Highland Park), who took sixth place in the 5,000 meter run. Her time of 18:00.88 was 15 seconds off her p.r., but she is still ranked third in the UAA in the 5K and fourth in the 3K.

Sophomore Haliana Burhans (Charlotte, Vt./Champlain Valley Union) competed in her home state and earned All-New England honors twice today. Individually, she placed seventh overall in the 400-meter dash with a time of 59.93 seconds. She is ranked 13th in the UAA in the 400 and 10th in the 200m.

Burhans also anchored the eighth-place 4x200-meter relay that finished second in their heat. She was joined by rookie Kanya Brown (Amherst, Mass./Amherst Regional), senior Tove Freeman (Oakham, Mass./Quabbin Regional) and rookie Ramani Dayon (Newark, N.J. / University). Their time of 1:47.61 was just a shade off finishing in sixth place and lowered their school record by two seconds.

Other finishes at the meet for the Judges

  • Tove Freeman placed 13th in the 600m run in 1:41.21.
  • Senior Maggie Hensel (Niskayuna, N.Y. / Niskayuna) was 14th in the mile in 5:23.41.

  • Rookie Doyin Ogundiran (Dix Hills, N.Y. / Half Hollow Hills East) was 20th in the 800-meter run with a time of 2:29.09.
  • Freeman, Ogundiran, Dayon and Burhans placed 12th in the 4x400-meter relay in 4:11.90.

The Judges' four All-New England performances accounted for 11 points and a tie for 18th place, Brandeis's best totals under current head coach Sinead Delahunty Evans and the team's best since 2011, when they were in 14th place with 19.3 points.

Brandeis will send several competitors to a USATF meet tomorrow in preparation for next weekend's University Athletic Association Championship meet at The Armory in New York City, hosted by NYU.
