As featured in the Providence Journal, the Valdez twins are rock stars in a school that isn’t known for its success stories. They are graduating at the top of their class at Hope High School, getting major scholarships to Brandeis University and winning track meets across Rhode Island.
Emily Bryson will make her fifth nationals trip, but first to the outdoor championships in the 1,500m, while Doyin Ogundiran will head to her first in any season in the 800m.
At the last meet before the Division III New England Championship, some Judges found success in running under-distance, while others needed to qualify to extend their season.
Led by event wins in the women's pole vault, the men's 400 meters, the men's decathlon, and the men's 4x100m and 4x400m relays, the men's team earned 4th and the women's team earned 8th overall.
At the Amherst Spring Fling, Emily Bryson, Scott Grote, and Irie Gourde combined for 4 event wins, leading the men's team’s charge to 3rd place and the women’s team’s charge to 7th.
The women’s team tied with UMass Boston for 7th place (40 points) while the men earned 9th place (44 points). In addition to Ogundiran’s 800m victory, eleven Judges scored individually as well as both teams’ 4x400m relays.
Emily Bryson finished second in her heat and fourth overall in the prelims as she is in search of her first indoor All-American honor and third overall. She will run tomorrow at 2:00 (1 Central).
For the fourth time in five seasons, Emily Bryson is headed to the NCAA Championships! She's seeded third in the mile and seventh in the 3000-meter run.
This weekend, the Judges will host the UAA Championship at Gosman Sports & Convocation Center. The Judges, coming off of third and fourth place finishes at the 2016 UAA Cross Country Championship, hope to emulate these results.
Irie Gourde scored 18 points for the men, winning the 200 and placing second in the 400, while Emily Bryson earned her first New England crown in the mile, edging the defending champ by 0.39.
Running at Boston U., the sophomore standout broke a school record that had stood since 2011. She is currently the top-ranked women's miler in Division 3.
