WALTHAM, Mass. – The Brandeis University track and field teams had one champion, three runner-up performances and seven total All-Association honors for finishing the top three as they hosted the second day of action at the 2017 University Athletic Association Indoor championships this weekend.
BRYSON SETS UAA RECORD MILE, EARNS BRONZE IN 3K
- The Judges' lone champion on the day was sophomore Emily Bryson (Quincy, Mass./No. Quincy), who won the mile run with a time of 4:55.29.
- Though well off her season-best time, Bryson won the event by nearly two full seconds thanks to a terrific kick on the last lap.
- Her mark bested the record set in 2010 by Washington University's Elizabeth Phillips.
- The UAA title was the third of Bryson's career, to go along with the 2015 cross country crown and the 2016 outdoor championship in the 5,000-meter run.
- Bryson is ranked third in Division III in the mile with just over a week before the NCAA Division III field is released.
- Bryson also earned All-Association honors in the 3,000-meter run with a time of 9:57.94. She finished behind a pair of runners in WashU's Alison Lindsay and Chicago's Khia Kurtenbach who both erased a 17-year UAA record in taking the top two spots.
GOURDE EARNS TWO SPRINT SILVER MEDALS, CHARIE TAKES BRONZE
- Men's junior Irie Gourde (Portland, Ore./York School, Toronto) earned two second-place finishes.
- He entered the meet ranked first in the 200, but was third after the preliminaries. In the finals, Gourde edged teammate Regan Charie (Topsfield, Mass. / Masconomet Reg.) at the tape, 22.68 seconds to 22.70.
- Chicago's Nate Downey won the second heat in 22.62 to take the crown, though Charie also earned All-Association honors by finishing third.
- In the 400-meter dash, Gourde also was top-seeded heading into the meet but fourth after the prelims.
- He again won his finals heat in a blazing personal-best time of 49.21 seconds, though Case Western Reserve's Nathan Wahner's time of 48.89 in the second heat earned the title.
- Gourde improved his standing in Division III to 16th place, putting him one place out of a guaranteed spot at the NCAA Championships.
PERRY CLAIMS SECOND IN TRIPLE JUMP
- The Judges' final second-place finisher was rookie Churchill Perry (Pembroke Pines, Fla. / Westminster Academy) in the triple jump.
- Perry vaulted into the second-place slot on his fifth jump of 13.25 meters, then went even further on his final attempt, reaching 13.48 meters (44 feet, 2 ¾ inches).
- It marks the third time in four years Brandeis had a top-two finish in the triple jump.
OGUNDIRAN EARNS 800 BRONZE
- Rounding out All-Association honors for the Judges was sophomore Doyin Ogundiran (Dix Hills, N.Y./Half Hollow Hills East) in the 800-meters.
- After setting a personal best in the prelims yesterday to earn the fourth seed, Ogundiran improved yet again by more than a full second with at time of 2:16.32, good for third place.
- Ogundiran moved into 27th place on the NCAA Division III leaderboard in the event.
KEY MEN'S 1600-METER RELAY
- The Judges picked up a key four points in the men's 4x400-meter relay, the final event of the day.
- The team of Perry, Charie, senior Jeremy Wilson (Elizabeth, N.J. / Elizabeth) and Gourde placed fourth with a time of 3:25.63.
- Needing to place ahead of NYU in order to finish ahead of the Violets in the team standings, the Judges bested them by four seconds and two places.
OTHER SCORING PERFORMANCES - MEN
- Charie also added a fourth-place finish in the 55-meter dash (6.63 seconds), just 0.02 out of a second All-Association performance.
- First-year pole vaulter Aaron Corin (Sudbury, Mass. / Lincoln-Sudbury Regional) cleared 4.11 meters (13-5 ¾) on his first attempt to earn fifth place.
- Rookie Jack Allan (Wrentham, Mass. / King Phillip Regional) was sixth in the 55-meter hurdles in 8.27 seconds.
OTHER SCORING PERFORMANCES – WOMEN
- Senior Maddie Dolins (Highland Park, Ill./Highland Park) joined Bryson in scoring in the 3K, placing fourth with a time of 10:20.40.
TEAM SCORING
- The Brandeis men had 47 points, an 11-point improvement on last year and their highest total at UAAs since 2010, while their sixth-place finish was the best since 2011. The Judges finished four ahead of seventh-place NYU.
- The women finished with 30 points, just one behind NYU for seventh place. They improved their point total by 21 over last year and had their highest score since 2013.
- The Carnegie Mellon men won their first title since 2012 with 116.3 points, well ahead of second-place Emory's 80.
- Washington University successfully defended their women's title, outscoring Chicago 159-99.
