Track and field competes at GBTC Invitational

Strong performances highlighted the Brandeis track and field teams outing this weekend.  Both teams competed at the non-scoring Greater Boston Track Club Invitational.

Top Performers – Women

  • Senior Jordin Carter (Fort Wayne, Ind. / R. Nelson Snyder) turned in another great performance in the 20-pound weight throw throwing 14.57 meters for 3rd place. The mark was over a two-foot personal best for Carter and met the qualifying standards for both the DIII ECAC and New England championships. Carter is ranked fourth in the UAA.
  • Sophomore Lydia Harris (Damariscotta, Maine / Lincoln Academy) turned in a top 8 performance in the 300m, placing 7th with a time of 45.19.
  • The event of the meet was the women's 600m where Brandeis athletes went 2,4,5,7.  Junior Doyin Ogundiran (Dix Hills, N.Y./Half Hollow Hills East) led the group with a time of 1:37.12 but was followed closely by rookie Lisbeth Valdez (Providence, R.I./Hope) with a time of 1:40.87, her twin sister Leinni Valdez (Providence, R.I./Hope) in 1:41.09, and junior Maya Sands-Bliss (Williamsburg, Mass. / Amherst Regional) in 1:42.53.  All of these times were qualifiers for the DIII New England championships.
  • In the women's Open Mile rookie Andrea Bolduc (Auburn, Mass. / Auburn) ran a personal best to place 3rd in 5:26.34.  Her senior teammate Kyra Shreeve (Northborough, Mass. / Algonquin Reg.) was quite close behind, placing 5th in 5:25.84.
  • In the 60-meter hurdles, personal bests were turned in by sophomore Willa Moen (Ashland, Ore. / Ashland) (10.70) and senior Jessie Moore (Rye, N.Y./Rye)  (10.83). 
  • The 4x220 yard relay team of sophomore Jordan Brill-Cass (Mansfield, Mass./Mansfield), junior Kanya Brown (Amherst, Mass./Amherst Regional), Moen and Moore ran to a time of 1:54.67 to place 2nd.

Top Performers – Men

  • In the 35-pound weight throw, junior Scott Grote (Greenfield, Mass. / Greenfield) had one of the most impressive performances of the day recording a throw of 13.68 meters.  This was a huge personal best for Grote, improving by more than a meter and a half.
  • In the short sprints, personal bests were turned in from sophomore Lorenzo Maddox (Atlanta, Ga. / Maynard Jackson), placing 15th in the 60m with a time of 7.34, and rookie Jake Ward (Weston, Fla. / Cypress Bay) who followed closely behind in 16th with a time of 7.36.
  • Junior Henry McDonald (Weymouth, Mass./Weymouth) ran a personal best in both the prelim and final of the 60m hurdles going 9.16 in the prelim before running 8.99 to place 3rd in the final. Rookie Aaron Baublis (Westborough, Mass. / Westborough) joined his teammate in the final running a personal best as well of 9.30 to place 6th.
  • Graduate student Irie Gourde (Portland, Ore. / York Academy, Canada) and sophomore Churchill Perry (Pembroke Pines, Fla. / Westminster Academy) went 1-2 in the 300m with times of 35.31 and 35.57 turned in strong performances.  Gourde's performance was particularly impressive as it was a full half-second improvement from last year.
  • Rookie Patrick Quinlan (Northampton, Mass. / Northampton) ran an impressive collegiate debut at 600m placing 4th in 1:24.56.
  • Sophomore Erez Needleman (Bronx, N.Y. / High School of American Studies at Lehman College) made his season debut after an early season injury. Needleman ran 2:04.15 in the 800m.
  • Senior Max Whitmore (Wayne, N.J. / Newark Academy) and rookie Harper Pollio-Barbee (Philadelphia, Pa. / Penn Charter) continued their impressive string of mile races running 4:26.87 and 4:27.85 for 3rd and 6th.
  • Rookie Breylen Ammen (Lincoln, Mass. / Lincoln Sudbury) had a great day in the pole vault, vaulting 4.10m for 4th.  This was the first time for Ammen over 4 meters in college.
  • Churchill Perry came back from the 300 to place 4th in the triple jump with a distance of 13.13 meters.
  • The meet was closed out with the rarely run 4x220 yard where the team of Gourde, Perry, McDonald, and Quinlan ran to the win with 1:32.42. 

Both teams return to action next weekend with athletes competing at either the BU Terrier Classic or the Tufts Stampede.
