Volleyball gets back to .500 with 3-2 win over Trinity

AMHERST, Mass. -- The Brandeis University women's volleyball team got back the .500 plateau tonight with their first five-game win of the season, defeating Trinity College, 3-2, in the opening round of the Amherst College Invitational.

Brandeis (5-5) won the first two games, 30-26, 30-23, but Trinity fought back. The Bantams won games three and four by scores of 30-25, 30-26. The Judges took the decisive game, 15-12, for the dramatic victory.

Offensively, Brandeis was led by rookie outside hitter Lorraine WIngenbach (Buffalo, N.Y.), who had 18 kills. Senior captain Jenna Polinsky (White Plains, N.Y.) added 11 killsm while sophomore middle hitter Jenny Sandler (Stafford, Va.) added 10. On the defensive end, Sandler had the top game with 27 digs, while Wingenbach added 21, a career-high. Also contributing a collegiate best was first-year setter Violette Ruggiero (Paradise Valley, Ariz.), who had 48 assists.

The Judges take on Middlebury and host Amherst in matches tomorrow.
