Wingenbach, Polinsky earn All-Tournament honors at Springfield

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. -- The Brandeis University volleyball team went 1-2 today and finished the season-opening Springfield College Invitational in a tie for second place. After defeating Roger Williams in the opener on Friday night, the Judges downed Suffolk University, 3-0, today before falling to Rhode Island College, 3-1, and the host and tourney champions Springfield College, 3-0, in the day's final match.

Against Suffolk, the Judges posted a relatively easy 30-18, 30-16, 30-19 victory. Rookie outside hitter Lorraine Wingenbach (Buffalo, N.Y.) led the squad with 15 kills and added six digs, while senior co-captain and middle hitter Jenna Polinsky (White Plains, N.Y.) added eight kills, a team-high seven digs and four service aces. Rookie setter Violette Ruggiero (Paradise Valley, Ariz.) had 35 assists.

Facing Rhode Island College, the young Judges dropped their two closest games of the tournament in the opener and decisive games, falling 31-33, 30-20, 23-30, 28-30. Sophomore outside hitter Jenny Sandler (Stafford, Va.) had her top performance of the early season, registering 17 kills and 16 digs. Wingenbach registered a career-high with 19 digs and added 12 kills and classmate Ruggiero had 30 assists and seven service aces.

Against host Springfield, Brandeis lost in three straight, 23-30, 17-30, 23-30. Statistics from this match are not currently available.

For their efforts, Polinsky and Wingenbach both earned the first All-Tournament honors of their careers.
