WALTHAM, Mass. – The Emory University women's volleyball
team, ranked No. 3 in the nation in Division III by the AVCA,
defeated previously unbeaten and top-ranked Washington (Mo.)
University in three games today to win the 2005 University Athletic
Association (UAA) championship.
Emory (30-5) snapped Washington University's (33-1) 33-match
winning streak by a 3-0 score. Game scores were 30-25, 30-22,
30-27. This marks just the second time in the 19-year history of
the tournament that a team other than the Bears have won the
tournament and the first time since Rochester won the tournament in
1988. WashU had won the previous 16 UAA titles. Emory has been the
conference runner-up six times, including three of the previous
five years. With the win, the Eagles claim the UAA's automatic
berth into the NCAA Championships
