WALTHAM, Mass. – With a pair of victories over Bridgewater
State College and Williams College, the Brandeis University
volleyball team won its sixth straight match of the season and its
16th in a row at home dating back to last season.
Brandeis (6-1) opened the day with a relatively easy 3-0 victory
over Bridgewater State (3-3). The Judges never trailed by more than
three points in the entire match and two 10-point runs of their own
en route to a 30-12, 30-12, 30-11 victory. Junior outside hitter
Lorraine Wingenbach (Buffalo, N.Y.) led the team with eight kills
and five service aces. Rookie outside Elizabeth Villalino (Kailua,
Hawaii) had seven kills and junior right-side hitter Becca Schwartz
(Newcastle, N.H.) and sophomore middle blocker Bridget McAllister
(Santa Clara, Calif.) had five each. As a team, the Judges hit for
a .384 percentage, with five different players hitting better than
.400 for the match.
Rookie setter Abby Blasco (Greeley, Colo.) had 26 assists, eight
digs and two service aces. Junior libero and captain Violette
Ruggiero (Paradise Valley, Ariz.) had a team-high 12 digs and added
four aces in her first match of the season.
In the second match of the day for Brandeis, their home winning
streak was put to its stiffest test of the past two seasons, as
they faced an Williams College team (6-1) that entered the day
undefeated. The Ephs had also dispatched Bridgewater State, 3-0
(30-23, 30-21, 30-20), earlier in the day.
For the first time since 2005, the Judges dropped two games on
their home floor, but rallied for a 3-2 victory with game scores of
30-19, 31-29, 15-30, 28-30, 15-9. After Brandeis cruised to their
game one victory, Williams held a 29-24 advantage in game two. The
Judges escaped, as Ruggiero served the game's final seven points to
give Brandeis the come-from-behind victory.
The Ephs responded with their 15-point win in game five before
rallying from a 27-24 deficit to take game four. Brandeis the
jumped out to a 6-0 victory in game five behind the serving of
Ruggiero and were able to hold off the visitors, 15-9, behind late
kills from Villalino and Schwartz.
Against Williams, the Judges were paced by three double-double
performances. Wingenbach had a team-high 22 kills and added 13
digs; sophomore middle blocker Piera Carfagno (Los Angeles, Calif.)
had 17 kills and a career-high 10 blocks (two solo); and Blasco had
career-high 53 assists and 19 digs. Ruggiero led the team with 20
digs, also a career-high, and five service aces.
Brandeis is next in action next weekend at the Amherst College
Classic.
