BRUNSWICK, Maine -- The Brandeis University volleyball team went
2-0 on the first day of the Midcoast Classic at Bowdoin College
today. The Judges defeated Emmanuel, 3-0 (30-10, 30-25, 30-23), and
tournament co-host Bates, 3-0 (30-12, 30-21, 30-26). The Judges,
now 13-4 on the season, will play tomorrow at Bates.
Brandeis defeated Emmanuel behind the offense of sophomore middle
blocker Bridget McAllister (Santa Clara, Calif.), who had 10 kills
and a .348 hitting percentage. She also contributed five digs on
defense. Rookie outside hitter Elizabeth Villalino (Kailua, Hawaii)
had nine kills, while junior Becca Schwartz (Newcastle, N.H.) had
eight. Junior libero Violette Ruggiero (Paradise Valley, Ariz.) had
seven digs, tying with rookie setter Abby Blasco (Greeley, Colo.),
who also had 29 assists and four service aces.
In the nightcap, the Judges topped Bates College in three straight.
McAllister and rookie middle blocker Nicole Smith (Marietta, Ga.)
each had 12 kills with impressive hitting percentages. Smith hit
.611, while McAllister hit .429 and added six digs. Ruggiero led
the squad with 15 digs, while senior defensive specialist Shannon
Trees (Savannah, Ga.) had 11. Blasco finished with 37 assists.
The Judges take on Keene State College tomorrow at noon and the
University of New England and 2 p.m.
