Volleyball wins Midcoast Classic with wins over Keene and UNE

LEWISTON, Maine -- The Brandeis volleyball team captured its second tournament of the season today, defeating Keene State College and the University of New England by 3-0 scores to win the Midcoast Classic hosted by Bowdoin and Bates colleges.

Brandeis (15-4) opened the second day of action against Keene State College, picking up a 30-27, 30-21, 30-18 victory. Junior outside hitter Lorraine Wingenbach (Buffalo, N.Y.) led the way offensively with 13 kills and a .258 hitting percentage. Rookie OH Elizabeth Villalino (Kailua, Hawaii) added 10 kills. Defensively, junior libero Violette Ruggiero (Paradise Valley, Ariz.) had 16 digs, while rookie setter Abby Blasco (Greeley, Colo.) and sophomore middle blocker Bridget McAllister (Santa Clara, Calif.) each had 12 digs. Blasco contributed 28 assists, while McAllister added five kills and five blocks.

The Judges wrapped up the tournament with a 30-23, 30-15, 30-17 win over the University of New England. Blasco nearly achieved a rare triple-double with 35 assists, 11 digs and eight service aces. Wingenbach and Villalino tied for team-high honors with 10 kills each. Wingenbach hit for a .455 percentage, while Villalino swung at a .240 clip.
