Volleyball earns first win over NYU since 2000, sweeps Chicago

ROCHESTER, N.Y. -- The Brandeis University volleyball team opened University Athletic Association championship play this morning with an emphatic 3-0 win over New York University, 30-22, 30-15, 30-23. It marks the first time since 2000 that the Judges defeated the Violets, snapping a 14-match losing streak. Junior Lorraine Wingenbach (Buffalo, N.Y.) led the way for the Judges with 13 kills and a .290 hitting percentage. Rookie Elizabeth Villalino (Kailua, Hawaii) had 11 kills, swinging at a .435 clip, and two service aces. Rookie setter Abby Blasco (Greeley, Colo.) had 32 assists and led the squad with 17 digs. Wingenbach also added nine digs.

In the second match of the day, Brandeis handled the University of Chicago, 3-0 (30-22, 30-23, 30-22). Wingenbach again paced the team with 13 kills and .360 hitting percentage. She also added nine digs and two service aces. Blasco tallied 34 assists, four digs and three aces, while junior libero Violette Ruggiero (Paradise Valley, Ariz.) paced the team defensively with 10 digs.

The third-seeded Judges (25-8) take on second-seeded Emory University (32-6), ranked No. 8 in the nation, tomorrow at 9 a.m. The winner will face the winner of the match between Washington University and Carnegie Mellon in tomorrow's championship match at 4:30 p.m., with the losers meeting in the third-place match at 2 p.m. Both of those matches will be webcast at http://www.rochester.edu/athletics/webcast .
