Volleyball falls to Emory and Carnegie to fourth at UAAs

ROCHESTER, N.Y. -- The Brandeis University volleyball team finished fourth in the UAA this afternoon. The Judges fell to No. 8-ranked Emory, 3-0 (30-21, 30-15, 30-21) in the last match of Pool play. They then dropped a 3-1 decision to Carnegie Mellon in the third-place match. After splitting the first two games with the Tartans, 30-26, 26-30, CMU won the last two 30-20, and 30-18.

In the opening match, the Judges struggled offensively. Junior Lorraine Wingenbach (Buffalo, N.Y.) led the way with just nine kills, while rookie Elizabeth Villalino (Kailua, Hawaii) had six. Defensively, junior libero Violette Ruggiero (Paradise Valley, Ariz.) had 12 digs, Wingenbach had nine and rookie setter Abby Blasco (Greeley, Colo.) had eight. Blasco also contributed 22 assists.

Against Carnegie Mellon, three players reached double figures in kills, paced by Wingenbach's 19. Sophomore middle blocker Piera Carfagno (Los Angeles, Calif.) had 16 kills, while senior opposite Ashley Powers (Waltham, Mass.) had 14 kills and hit for a .379 percentage. Blasco had a fine all-around performance with 54 assists and a team-high 26 digs.

Brandeis wraps up its regular season with a 25-10 record, the second-highest win total in school history. Coach Michelle Kim's squad's fourth-place finish at UAAs is the team's best since placing fourth in 1990. Their only better finish came in 1989 when they were runners-up.

The Judges will find out on Monday about a possible NCAA or ECAC postseason berth.
